Corporate Controller

Landings Real Estate Group is hiring a Corporate Controller to manage the accounting operations of a medium size private real estate firm. Landings Real Estate Group acquires, develops, and manages multifamily, retail, office, and hospitality properties throughout the Eastern United States.

The Controller will be responsible for directing and overseeing all aspects of the accounting department for the owner entity companies consisting of a diverse portfolio of commercial real estate in multi-family, hospitality, retail, and office space. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in real estate accounting, tax reporting, strong leadership abilities and exceptional people skills.

Under the direction of the President and CEO, this position is responsible for applying professional knowledge and skills in the preparation, presentation, and analysis of financial and other decision-oriented information to assist with budgeting and financial reporting/planning/analysis/etc. The Controller directly supports the organization by ensuring financial stability and by providing top management with key financial information that ultimately impacts business decisions.

Primary responsibilities and requirements include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Lead, manage, and train accountants within the department to include hiring, onboarding and offboarding. Demonstrate initiative and interpersonal skills to provide and maintain successful team relations and outcomes.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements with Chief Operating Officer and Director of Lodging and analyze performance for multiple entities.
  • Oversee cash management and deposit account reconciliation for numerous entities.
  • Monitor cash balances and cash forecasts.
  • Maintain control over construction projects including funding, documenting, and reporting.
  • Maintain internal controls, compliance, and GAAP for real estate accounting.
  • Prepare and deliver approved employee performance evaluations.
  • Creates an atmosphere of support, encouragement, and collaboration.
  • Prioritizes appropriately to accomplish critical tasks first.
  • Oversee payroll/W-2s/1099s, quarterly taxes and benefit payments.
  • Review and understand partnership agreements and partner/investor waterfalls for income, fees, capital calls and cash flow distributions.
  • Track and record waterfall distribution payments from lower tier entities
  • Manage journal entries and accruals (purchase of assets, sale of assets, transfer of assets, loan refinance) for multiple entities.
  • Bank loan reconciliations
  • Financial reporting to owners, investors, and partners - monthly and quarterly
  • Assist with year-end tax compliance, successfully partnering with an outside CPA firm to prepare all federal income tax returns and all legal and corporate filings for multiple entities.
  • Develop financial and tax strategy recommendations.
  • Review and approve audits, tax returns, K1's, and other tax-related items.
  • Maintain relationships with banking institutions, partners, insurance brokers, and tax advisors.
  • Preparation and maintenance of debt schedules and work with Investment Analyst on quarterly real estate owned cash flow reporting.
  • Provide analysis in the development and monitoring of short and long-term strategic financial objectives.
  • Evaluate and advise on the impact of long-range planning and introduction of new programs/strategies.
  • Evaluate, design, implement, and monitor internal financial controls, accounting processes and policies for efficiency, cost effectiveness, and accuracy.

Experience:

  • 5+ years of accounting experience, preferably in a Controller function for a real estate-based company.
  • YARDI experience preferred, but not required.
  • Knowledge of GAAP, accrual basis accounting and financial reporting
  • CPA certification preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required. MBA preferred, but not required.
  • Proficiency in Windows operating systems.
  • Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Excel, and Word experience required.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently and problem solve
